What comes to mind when you think about your community? For me, a million memories rush through my mind. I see my family and my friends gathered for an event, I picture the area and recall how beautiful it looks on a warm sunny day, and I remember all that I have learned being there. Then, I smile. Even if you’re living in your new home within a new community, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t look back on it and smile.
That is our thinking behind YAYbourhood. We want to promote happy communities by doing the little things that can change a bad day into a good one. Whether you think about that time your neighbour saved the day with a cup of milk for your cake, or the beautiful walk you took down the path in the urban forest last fall, your community is here to make you happy.
On April 14th, we held an event at the Century Park LRT station where we handed out coffees, cookies, and compliments to transit users on their way to work. The reaction we got from these people was enough to tell us to continue on! We’ve really hit the ground running with YAYbourhood, because once you start seeing what impact a little act of kindness can have on someone, smile inducing ideas come rushing to your head at 100km an hour.
That’s why we’re planning for a bunch of events throughout the year to continue spreading the joy throughout Edmonton. However, they’re all surprises… so keep an eye out for us on social media and in the paper! In the meantime, make your neighbourhood a YAYbourhood by making someone smile today.
